I usually identify this by looking at Google Search Console and seeing that the page is getting impressions for a wide range of keywords, but not ranking well for any of them. It’s one of those issues that isn’t always obvious at first glance, because the page looks fine on the surface. When you compare that to competitors, they almost always have separate pages for each service, which is the proper way to structure it.

Each service should have its own dedicated page with a clear focus. That gives Google a better understanding of what each page is about and allows it to rank more effectively for that specific service. Once that’s in place, rankings usually improve across multiple keywords, and more importantly, the traffic coming in is much more qualified because it matches what people are actually searching for.

The fix wasn’t glamorous. We audited and resolved the indexing and rendering issues first, restored internal linking and URL consistency, and clarified the brand continuity between Velora and ParaSwap so both search engines and LLMs understood it was the same product. Only one page (the homepage) was fully optimised at that point.

Crawl data showed thousands of indexable parameter URLs with near-duplicate titles and thin page content, while Search Console showed a spike in crawled-but-not-indexed pages and less crawl activity on priority categories. Log file analysis confirmed Googlebot was spending a big share of its requests on filter URLs that had no search value.

The fix was to stop treating every filtered URL as a page worth indexing. Canonicals were pointed back to the main category pages, low-value parameter patterns were blocked from crawling where appropriate, internal links to junk combinations were removed, and only a small set of high-intent filter pages stayed indexable. Hreflang implementation on a trilingual boutique retail site in Morocco (French, English, Arabic). The previous team had hreflang tags pointing to URLs that returned 301 redirects. Google was crawling the hreflang, hitting the redirect, and treating the international structure as broken.

The site had three language folders: /fr/, /en/, /ar/. Every page had hreflang annotations in the head. On the surface, everything looked correct. But organic traffic to the English and Arabic sections was flat for nine months, even though the French section was performing well.

How I found it, step by step:

First, I ran the site through Ahrefs Site Audit filtered specifically for hreflang errors. It flagged 840 pages with “hreflang points to non-canonical or redirected URL”. The previous agency had recently changed the English URL structure from /en-us/ to /en/ and updated the canonical tags but forgotten to update the hreflang references.

Second, I confirmed by inspecting the rendered HTML on 10 sample pages. Every hreflang for English pointed to /en-us/[slug]/ which 301-redirected to /en/[slug]/. Google’s documentation is explicit: hreflang must point to the final canonical URL, not to a redirect.

Third, I checked Search Console’s International Targeting report. Errors across the board, which nobody had looked at in months.

The fix took about four hours of dev work: a sitewide find-and-replace on the hreflang URLs in the CMS template, plus re-submitting the sitemaps.
